Abstract
The fusion of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and smart medical devices in the area of the Internet of Health Things (IoHT) allows improved comfort for patients, affordable medical services, rapid clinical treatments, and greater levels of personalized medical care. These intelligent devices act as the fundamental building blocks of an IoHT system, generating health data and transferring it to the server for analysis. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive overview of the IoHT technologies. This study highlights the fundamental concepts behind IoHTs - providing in-brief descriptions of the significant components of IoHT, including devices, architectures, and communication techniques. Later, we demonstrate the recent advances of the IoHT for innovative healthcare applications such as patient monitoring, smart medication, chronic diseases, and ambient assisted living. We also present an in-depth discussion of the critical research challenges and potential future directions of the IoHT. The findings provided in this chapter have the potential to be a significant resource for healthcare professionals, novice scientists, and researchers, as well as decision-makers, contributing to the progress and improvement of the IoHT.
